Well put and Bollocks indeed Marty! You do whatcha gotta do to survive no matter how much we despise it. I was going around applying at retail stores and what not just to get a paycheck but even those places weren't getting back to me. I had to resort to selling off most of my decent stuff and freelancing where I could just to get a little dough. Still hoping to go out and get my Hog, Avo & GrandMa programming training courses & certifications just so I can get better jobs but right now I'm still a beginning programmer but an experienced board op but they don't want ops, they want designers and I'm not quite there yet. I'm also learning Audio Engineering and Production just to broaden my skill set but the likelihood of getting a job that's willing to train as we go is slim to none so I'm learning on my own. My theatre internship this fall is putting Sound/Audio into it as well as lighting because I expressed an interest and they really want somebody that is interested in both which definitely works in my favor though it's largely an unpaid internship, that's the big downer. We'll all get through this, we've just gotta keep plugging along. The economy may be ass right now but we all know that things will get better eventually, we've just gotta be patient ;-) Good hunting, shows and luck ladies and gents!

Im ffeling the pinch as well, have a few local shows, but had to go back and play paramedic to make ends meet, god i hate that job! And you would think that after 29 years it would be a piece of cake (as it has always been in the past) to get a tour or something. Good luck to all,we will get through this! Peace

Thanks Chris, it's much appreciated. It's kinda hard to stay optimistic given how tough everything is but I know what I want and I won't stop until I achieve it. I also know and have been around just long enough to know that it's going to take a good long while to achieve those goals but just because things are crap right now and we're all fighting to find work doesn't make me want to quit and do something else.

Dude that absolutely sucks for you both. I'm in the process of moving into basically the ghettos of philly because I was about to be evicted from my place too, I got lucky and found a landlord that's letting me live dirt cheap in exchange for work on the place. Gotta love going back to my theatre tech roots. I'm actually only making chicken scratch when it comes to design and it's for a really small time theatre company right now. I'm basically a very low paid glorified intern but hey, it's design credits and a little bit of money. All of us are going through hell right now, I'm actually running back to school to just get the tax break and the assistance that I really need while interning all to hell just in the hopes that if I ride this wave out that things will get better. Perseverance is key. There will always be a need for lighting designers & technicians because performers will always need to be seen. We'll all get through this, we just have to keep at it and if it means taking shit jobs in the mean time just to get through it, then so be it. If any of us got into this industry in the hopes of being rich, then we're in the wrong industry because anybody that's in this industry knows that (for the most part) we do it because we love it and not for the money, fame and recognition that goes along with it.

typically the band pays the backline techs unless it's a bigger tour where they hire out a company...but typically it's the band that pays the crew ultimately it's the band/management that pays the crew anyways, even if they're getting their chec...
